While at New Deal Design, I helped Comcast Xfinity realize progress toward a complete redesign of their home automation offering.

Their previous home automation offering relied on third-party device providers and contract manufacturers to deliver system components. The goal of this project was to redesign every object with an eye for a unified aesthetic and improved functionality. The ID team made an incredible ecosystem, integrated with UX. I represented PD from early on in the brainstorming sessions to guide what was or could be feasible.

The resulting forms created significant manufacturing issues, but through paper models, CAD animation, and consulting with a few adept manufacturers, I was able to meet ID's intent without sacrificing structure or ease of assembly or testing.

Development highlights:

  • Worked with the ID team from the ideation phase through to delivery of the final concept of the family of devices
  • Design for ingress protection to IP64 standards
  • Design to meet UL standards
  • Worked with the housing manufacturers to create the full DFM for each device
  • Created an MCO for the EE contract manufacturer for each device
  • Created functional proof-of-concept of the proposed screen technology with off-the-shelf components and an Arduino, and a hacked Kindle Paperwhite
  • Represented the PD group at on-site meetings in Philadelphia (Comcast headquarters)
